Designers don't just create products and solutions out of no where. They have a process that enables them to succeed. In MYP Design we focus on how to approach design. Students learn the Design Cycle- An effective method for engaging with design problems.
Our goal is for students to be able to apply the design cycle to solve problems for people around their communities and beyond.
We focus on real world situations in Design.
In this unit we focus on budgets. How can one use software to budget?
The objective of this unit is for the students to design a budget or provide a solution or advice on how to effectively manage, plan the use of finances.
Units Details
Key concept: Relationships
Related concept: Functions and market trends
Global context: Scientific and technical innovations
AK strand: Global economics
Statement of inquiry:
Innovations in budgeting is a function of the relationships arising from the input variables.
Inquiry questions:
Factual Which formulas are appropriate in calculations for different situations?
ConceptualHow do you determine the best formulas to be used while calculating?
DebatableDoes the use budgeting software solutions kill human calculation creativity?
Activity 1
a) Use the link below to attempt the
following spreadsheets activities; additions, subtraction, multiplication,
multiplication, mean, mode, median, max and min.
Present feasible
design ideas, which can be correctly interpreted by others
You
will be required to design how you expect your EBook to look like. This will
include the design of the cover page and some of the pages inside. Look at the
examples below.
Your
task now will be to design two designs of how you foresee your ebook to look
like. You can draw the designs and scan them or use any online design software
that can allow to design the ebook structure/layout.
Every
designer may approach a problem in a different way. Depending on their specialism,
designers tend to have their own methodology, but some general activities are
common to all designers.
The design
cycle model underpins the design process. The design cycle model above
represents the MYP design methodology of how designers develop products.
The
process is divided into four stages: inquiring and analysing; developing ideas;
creating the solution; evaluating.
This
incremental process allows the designer to go from identifying a design
opportunity to the testing and evaluation of a solution. This process leads to
the creation of solutions that solve a problem.
Activity 1
Who are
these individuals below?
What has
each of them achieved?
How does
their achievement relate to our Subject: Digital Design?
We also
have other personalities that have had the greatest impact in Information
Technology.
Communication is the exchange or transfer of signals,
facts, ideas and symbols. It requires a sender, a message and an intended
receiver. Communication involves the activity of conveying information or
meaning. Effective communication requires a common 'language' (which may be
written, spoken or non-verbal).
Related Concepts: Perspectives
AKA Strands: Ethics
Statement of Inquiry: Designers adapt the form in which information is communicated in order
to make it accessible to the end user.
Inquiry Questions
Factual: What publishing techniques have made
the greatest impact in publishing?
Conceptual: Do publishers publish because of
content or digital tools?
Debatable: Is the use digital publishing tools
static or dynamic?
Factual What
publishing techniques have made the greatest impact in publishing?
Conceptual Do
digital tools determine what is published?
Debatable Is
it true that digital publishing tools provides more freedom to publishers?

Criterion A: Inquiring and Analysing
This is
the first stage in design.
You
will be presented with a design situation, from which you identify a problem
that needs to be solved. You will analyse the need for a solution and conduct
an inquiry into the nature of the problem.
In
order to reach the aims of design, students should be able to:
i.explain
and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a specified client/target
audience
ii.identify
and prioritize the primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution
to the problem
iii.analyse
a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the problem
iv.develop
a detailed design brief which summarizes the analysis of relevant research.
Our Problem
a)Our problem relates to publishing.
Name
some publications / books you know published to address some problems of the
society.
Some
of the problems students can publish books for includes;
i.Bullying
problems in schools
ii.Problem
of littering
iii.Heathy
eating
iv.Importance
of Exercises
v.Traffic
problem in Mombasa
vi.Safety
in the internet
Name
other problems that you may want to publish a book for;
Problem Justification:
Pick
any problem or one from the list above and explain why the problem is important
to you and who would be you possible client/ target audience.
Research
Before
developing any solution, research is very important.
We have
two types of research;
a)Primary research; Where we collect information
first hand from source using interviews or questionnaires
b)Secondary research; where we collect information from
books, internet, magazines etc.
Read
the article in this link and fill in the table below on the research skills you
need to know.
For example PD; a clock project.
A good Design Brief might be something like this...
"Teenagers have very busy lives. School, family and social activities mean
that being punctual is very important.
I will design and make a wall clock that will be appealing for teenage girls.
It will be a modern design and will be suitable for a teenage girl's bedroom.
Because the design will appeal to teenage girls, them they will be more likely
to look at it, read the time and therefore not be late.
A poor
example would be something like this: " I will make a football clock from plastic and print out pictures of
players to use as the numbers."
Write
your own design brief statement based on your research
