Smart Cells Unit

Introduction
Designers don't just create products and solutions out of no where.  They have a process that enables them to succeed.  In MYP Design we focus on how to approach design. Students learn the Design Cycle- An effective method for engaging with design problems.

Our goal is for students to be able to apply the design cycle to solve problems for people around their communities and beyond.

We focus on real world situations in Design.
In this unit we focus on budgets. How can one use software to budget?

The objective of this unit is for the students to design a budget or provide a solution or advice on how to effectively manage, plan the use of finances.

Criterion B: Developing Ideas

Criterion B: Developing Ideas

In this stage you will
      i.        develop a list of success criteria for the solution
ii.        present feasible design ideas, which can be correctly interpreted by others
   iii.        present the chosen design
iv.        Create a planning drawing/diagram which outlines the main details for making the chosen solution.

Please remember that our objective is to create an online interactive publication (ebook)

Developing a list of success criteria for the solution
What are the main features (specs) you want to see in your final product (online ebook). List 6 of them.
Refer to

Present feasible design ideas, which can be correctly interpreted by others
You will be required to design how you expect your EBook to look like. This will include the design of the cover page and some of the pages inside. Look at the examples below.

Your task now will be to design two designs of how you foresee your ebook to look like. You can draw the designs and scan them or use any online design software that can allow to design the ebook structure/layout.

Design 1

Design of Cover page
Design of one Page inside
Design of the Back page

Design 2

Present the chosen design
From the two designs above;
·         Which design will you chose for your final eBook product?
·         Why that design?
·         What improvements can you make to chosen design?

Write your responses below

Junior Publisher Inquiring and Analysis Activities

MYP Year 7 Junior Publisher Unit
MYP Design Cycle

Every designer may approach a problem in a different way. Depending on their specialism, designers tend to have their own methodology, but some general activities are common to all designers.
The design cycle model underpins the design process. The design cycle model above represents the MYP design methodology of how designers develop products.
The process is divided into four stages: inquiring and analysing; developing ideas; creating the solution; evaluating.
This incremental process allows the designer to go from identifying a design opportunity to the testing and evaluation of a solution. This process leads to the creation of solutions that solve a problem.

Unit title: Junior Publisher
Key concept: Communication
Communication is the exchange or transfer of signals, facts, ideas and symbols. It requires a sender, a message and an intended receiver. Communication involves the activity of conveying information or meaning. Effective communication requires a common 'language' (which may be written, spoken or non-verbal).

This is the first stage in design.

You will be presented with a design situation, from which you identify a problem that needs to be solved. You will analyse the need for a solution and conduct an inquiry into the nature of the problem.

In order to reach the aims of design, students should be able to:
      i.        explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a specified client/target audience
ii.        identify and prioritize the primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution to the problem
iii.        analyse a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the problem
iv.        develop a detailed design brief which summarizes the analysis of relevant research.

Our Problem
a)    Our problem relates to publishing.
Name some publications / books you know published to address some problems of the society.

http://blog.gembaacademy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/what-problem-are-you-trying-to-solve.pngSome of the problems students can publish books for includes;
      i.        Bullying problems in schools
     ii.        Problem of littering
   iii.        Heathy eating
    iv.        Importance of Exercises
     v.        Traffic problem in Mombasa
    vi.        Safety in the internet

Name other problems that you may want to publish a book for;

Problem Justification:
Pick any problem or one from the list above and explain why the problem is important to you and who would be you possible client/ target audience.

Research
Before developing any solution, research is very important.
We have two types of research;
a)    Primary research; Where we collect information first hand from source using interviews or questionnaires
b)    Secondary research; where we collect information from books, internet, magazines etc.

Read the article in this link and fill in the table below on the research skills you need to know.

Research Activities: Junior Publisher Unit
Planning your research process. It important that you have a plan for your research.
What are some of the key areas you would like to do research on which relates to publication?
General areas of Research
Prioritize your research areas
(Pick only 4 areas that you will focus your research)
·         What is publishing?
·         What are some of publishing software used?
·         How are books published online?
·         What are the different types of publishing?
·         Which devices are used to read eBooks?
·         What are some of main features you would like to see in an online publication?
·         What skills do I need to have?
·         What are some of the techniques required for online publication?
·         What is interactive publication?
·         What kids of books have been published by children?
·         How are eBooks sold online?
·         How do you pay for an online book?
·         What are the current innovations in digital publishing?
What else can you add on this list

From the four priority areas, your will start research
Priority One; _________________________________________________________
What information did you find out? So what with that information?

Internet/book Source

Priority Two; _________________________________________________________
What information did you find out? So what with that information?

Priority Three; _________________________________________________________

Priority Four; _________________________________________________________

Internet/book Source

Research Activity 2
Use at least 4 types of free online storybook publication builders and give your feedback

Name story book builder software
What does the software allows you to do; (main features)
What are the problems / Limitations of the software

Analyzing:  Of the softwares above which software main features have impressed you and how do plan to include those features in your product?

Design Brief

Design Brief is a short statement of what you are going to make, why you are going to make it, and for whom you are making it for.

It should be an open ended statement.

For example PD; a clock project.
A good Design Brief might be something like this...
"Teenagers have very busy lives. School, family and social activities mean that being punctual is very important.
I will design and make a wall clock that will be appealing for teenage girls. It will be a modern design and will be suitable for a teenage girl's bedroom. Because the design will appeal to teenage girls, them they will be more likely to look at it, read the time and therefore not be late.

A poor example would be something like this:
" I will make a football clock from plastic and print out pictures of players to use as the numbers."

Write your own design brief statement based on your research

Bibliography
List the website that you have used throughout the research period. (at least 6)
